Sex / Sexuality
Sex and sexuality are ordinary parts of being human. Some will say sex and sexuality are extraordinary parts of being human! Sex and sexuality are also routinely sublimated, mediated, and “policed” by cultural, political, social and religious norms. Technology has added its own layer of comparison, let alone a myriad of reasons for feeling sexual dissatisfaction. Making time for a direct conversation is not indulgent; it treats a central part of human experience as worth discussing.
People arrive with anxiety about sex, uncertainty about orientation, conflict about desire, difficulty with function, low or seemingly uncontrollable sexual drive. Very often they have never said anything regarding sex out loud. Shame, guilt or moral conflict can silence the individual — even with close friends or a loving partner. Medical and clinical professionals sometimes steer around this set of topics, too, unless they happen to be comfortable with the wide range of what people actually do and feel sexually.
